Say No to Microwavable Popcorn

Who doesn’t love popcorn? Popcorn is an acceptable snack on GOLO with one condition – stay away from the microwave kind. You may be asking, “Why? That’s the easiest way to make it!” Maybe…but when you hear about the health consequences that may stem from it, you may change your mind.

The first problem is the bag it comes in – it is lined with perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). It can stay in the environment and in the human body for long periods of time. The Environmental Protection Agency lists PFOA as a carcinogen.

The next problem is the contents. Popular brands have ingredients such as partially hydrogenated soybean oil, natural and artificial flavor, TBHQ, citric acid, “natural butter flavor with other natural flavors,” propyl gallate and soy lecithin to name a few. All sorts of chemicals and questionable ingredients that you really don’t want in your body.

Let’s talk about the artificial butter flavoring. How bad could it possibly be? The answer is VERY bad. In fact, it has been known to cause a specific disease, “popcorn lung,” in those who just work around it. “Popcorn lung” is the nickname for bronchiolitis obliterans. This is a condition that damages your lungs’ smallest airways and makes you cough and feel short of breath. And this happens just by breathing in the chemical. It has also been linked to diminished cognitive functions.

The solution is to make your own popcorn, popping kernels either on the stove in a pot or you can even pop your own in the microwave using just a plain brown bag. You can use olive oil, coconut oil or any oil that has a high smoking point. You can even add some real butter! It tastes better and is even better for you!
