Oil Pulling

Today, we are going to talk about oil pulling- an ancient Ayurvedic practice that promotes oral health and detoxification of the body. It is done most commonly with coconut oil; however, you can use sesame oil as well. The main reason to oil pull is to pull harmful bacteria, fungus and other organisms out of the mouth, teeth, gums, and even throat. Also, many holistic practitioners use it for a variety of health conditions. It is believed that these oils help the flow of the lymphatic system as the harmful bacteria is removed and the beneficial bacteria has room to prosper.

The way to do this is to take a teaspoon of coconut oil (extra virgin, cold pressed), and place it in your mouth, and swishing it for approximately 10-15 minutes and then spitting out into a garbage can (it can clog your plumbing). In the beginning though, it is okay to start at 5 minutes and work your way up to the desired time. Make sure not to swallow any of the oil, because it will be full of toxins that can be reabsorbed through your body. The many health benefits of oil pulling are:

• Prevent bad breath
• Prevent dry mouth
• Possible treatment for jaw soreness or TMJ
• Headache relief
• Hormone balancing
• Reduce skin conditions
• Improve vision
• Promotes normal sleeping patterns

• May help to reduce congestion
