Artificial Sweeteners: Not So Sweet

Artificial sweeteners are chemically derived and highly processed. Are you aware of what they do to the body?

There are 6 FDA-approved artificial sweeteners- saccharin, aspartame, acesulfame potassium, sucralose, neotame, and advantame. These sweeteners can be up to 20,000 times sweeter than sugar.

Studies have linked artificial sweeteners to overeating and weight gain. When you eat things that are sweet and have no calories, the brain gets tricked into thinking it should keep eating. There is also evidence suggesting a correlation between artificial sweeteners and the amygdala (the part of the brain involved in deciphering caloric value from taste), causing brain changes that affect eating behavior. It is also possible that blood sugar and insulin can be affected by these sweeteners as well.

You may be wondering, what types of sweeteners should you use? GOLO recommends sugar in the raw, real honey, real maple syrup, coconut palm sugar and liquid Stevia. There is nothing like the real thing!
