Adrenal Gland Health

Today’s post is about adrenal glands. In case you didn’t know, the adrenals are very important glands that are located at the top of your kidneys. Their functions include the production of cortisol (the stress hormone), aldosterone (a blood pressure controlling hormone), and androgens and estrogen (sex hormones).
These two glands are very important to your wellbeing. If they are not functioning correctly, then you may have one or more of the following signs:

• Excessive Fatigue
• Non-refreshing sleep
• Sleep-disturbance and/or insomnia
• Inability to handle stress
• Cravings for salty foods
• Excess hunger
• Higher energy levels in the evenings
• A weak immune system

What Causes These Problems?

Stress and toxicity are major contributors but a diet high in sugar and processed foods is the most likely culprit. And if not regulated, adrenal issues can lead to many other serious conditions.

What To Do?

1. Eliminate processed foods and refined sugar.
2. Make sure you don’t skip meals- when you do, you’re putting stress on your body, which tells your adrenals to release hormones to help get back in balance.
3. Make sure you get a good night’s sleep. Getting yourself into a regular sleep schedule will really help.
4. If you need that caffeine fix, choose tea over coffee. Although tea still contains caffeine, it has more of a calming effect. And if you do have coffee, make sure it is in a small amount before noon.
5. Avoid all hydrogenated oils as they are highly inflammatory (and GOLO does not recommend them anyway). Stick to olive or coconut oil, organic butter or ghee.
6. We all have heard the cliché, “Laughter is the best medicine,” but it really is true. When you laugh, it relieves stress and your body relaxes, which gives your adrenals time to recover.
7. Meditating is also good for your adrenals, since it relaxes your entire body.
8. Make sure you are getting enough magnesium. If you are already taking the Release supplement, you are covered!

What to Eat:

1. Protein-rich foods such as eggs, lentils, nuts, seeds, and wild fatty fish.
2. Coconut, Olives & Avocados – full of healthy fats that your body needs.
3. Bone broth – contains many of the minerals that your adrenals crave.
4. Seaweed is easily digested, high in iodine, and contain an array of essential nutrients that are not found in food sources on land.
5. Fermented foods like sauerkraut, kombucha and kefir are beneficial to your digestion and nutrient absorption.
6. Leafy greens are full of magnesium, vitamin C, iron, chlorophyll and fiber.
7. Fruits such as apples, pears, plums, kiwi, mango, papaya, blueberries and cherries.
